Reusable Cleaning Wipes made from Recycled T-shirts and Essential Oils – Free Tutorial
Welcome to Week Six of my Ten Week T-Shirt Challenge! This week I am sharing a Free Tutorial showing you how to make your own Reusable Cleaning Wipes made out of old T-Shirts.
Before I share the instructions for the reusable cleaning wipes, I want to share a little about each of the ingredients used in this project. I think its important to understand the uses and properties of what’s in your wipes. Essential oils have the potential to kill germs, destroy bacteria and eliminate bad odor due to their antiseptic qualities. The three we are using in the project are powerful and when combined with vinegar you get a great cleaning agent.
Lavender has been referred to as the “Swiss Army Knife” of Essentials Oils because it is one of the most versatile of all essential oils. Most commonly known for its relaxing effects on the body, therapeutic-grade lavender has been highly regarded for the skin.
It may be used to cleanse cuts, bruises and skin irritations. The fragrance is calming, relaxing and balancing – physically and emotionally.
French laboratory studies in the early 20th century showed that lavender is a powerful antibacterial that is lethal to bacteria that cause typhoid, TB & diphtheria.
Lemon is best known for it’s ability to cleanse toxins from any part of the body and is widely used to stimulate lymph drainage, to rejuvenate energy, purify skin and act as a bug repellant.
According to a study published in the International Journal of Food Microbiology last year, lemon oil may actually be the most powerful anti-microbial agent of all the essential oils.
Another study published in Experimental Biology and Medicine found that breathing in the scent of lemon essential oils improved neurological activity that promotes the breakdown of body fat.
Other uses for Lemon oil are as a teeth whitener, laundry freshener, cellulite cream, and face wash.
Tea Tree. This essential oil has antimicrobial and antiseptic properties. It contains constituents called terpenoids and it is believed that these naturally occurring organic chemicals are the main reason for its healing properties. Terpenoids are used extensively for their aromatic qualities and they also play a role in traditional herbal remedies and are under investigation for their antibacterial and their pharmaceutical functions.
Tea tree oil is a standard ingredient to many homemade cleaner recipes as it gets rid of germs and sanitizes surfaces.
Vinegar is a weak form of acetic acid that forms through the fermentation of sugars or starches. It is completely edible, and cannot harm your stomach.
The uses of vinegar are nearly endless. In addition to cleaning, it is an excellent item for cooking and for home science experiments (remember the vinegar-and-baking soda volcanoes from grade school?).
There are many health benefits to vinegar too. As reported in the Journal of Food Science: “Functional therapeutic properties of vinegar… include antibacterial activity, blood pressure reduction, antioxidant activity, reduction in the effects of diabetes, prevention of cardiovascular disease, and increased vigor after exercise.”
